I’ve been using the Cisco 7960 and 7940 phones for several years now, and have learned a few tips and tricks over the years. Among those is a simple *, 6 and settings key sequence that reboots a 7960 / 7940 device, which acts much like power cycling the phone. I have a friend who, to this day, thanks me for “revealing” this secret key code to him. So, FWIW, here’s the complete list of keys and URLs that you may find useful while playing around with the best-sip-phones-ever-built:
- * 6 Settings Reboots the phone as mentioned above.
- * * # Unlocks the configuration. Unless you’re using SIP versions greater than 7.X, in which case, you’d have to manually unlock the phone by going to “Settings -> Unlock Config” and entering the configuration password. Default password is “cisco”, just in case.

Ankur, Your kind comments about the Cisco info on my website (Cat24.net) are a pleasant surprise. Thank you for mentioning them in your blog. As a way of keeping the website content up to date, without changing the website pages, I have also started a blog. There is a bit more Cisco info there http://blog.cat24.net I will also be adding content about the 7961 and 7970 phones fairly soon.
Keep blogging .. good luck
How can Install SIP firmware 8.2 on my Cisco 7960, I tried but it gives me error while grabbing firmware from the TFTP server, it asks for a file which probably not available in 8.2 package.
I’ve had luck to successfully install Cisco SIP firmware version 7.4 by following following URL:
http://www.syednetworks.com/configure-cisco-7960-with-sip
But they didn’t mentioned how can I install 8.2 on my phone. Please help if anybody knows .. keep in mind I want to use it with Asterisk.
Thank you for this… Default password is “cisco” is right on the money! That helped a lot!
